Passports and Travel Documents

Most lad's holiday destinations are within the EU, so you'll just need to wave your passport to get through the airport and onto the main event.
Be sure to keep your passport safe though... Last year 15,000 Britons under-25 lost their passport whilst on holiday! Most travel insurers will cover you for this but you don't want the hassle - or to miss out on any action while you're at the embassy...
The Identity and Passports service have asked us to pass on this advice:

The Identity and Passports service have asked us to pass on this advice:
Take two photocopies of your passport before your holiday. Leave one with a relative or friend and take the other with you - keep it in a separate place to your actual passport.
Keep your passport with you whilst you're travelling. Keep it in your hand luggage or in a zipped pocket. Make sure you're ready to produce it promptly when required.
Be wary if you're ever asked to surrender your passport. While some foreign officials may ask for your passport (as may some hotels) check with your travel operator or the British consulate as to whether this is standard procedure or not.
If your passport's stolen or lost while you're away, report it to the local police immediately. Then get in touch with the nearest British consulate or embassy for further advice. The British Consul can issue an emergency passport if necessary.

Travel Money

There are various ways to take your beer-tokens away with you. You need to decide which suits you - some are riskier than others... Have a read through these options, and then the safest way is probably to hedge your bets and take a combination of cash and plastic.
Cash/Foreign exchange
British holidaymakers spent £8.8bn abroad last summer. 35% of that was taken out of the country in cash and coins. Carrying too much money can be risky, but most people like to arrive knowing they can pay for a taxi from the airport and get themselves a drink.

If you're changing cash before you go: Shop around to see who's offering the best exchange rates and commission. Make sure you check on the total cost of the transaction though - you may find that an attractive exchange rate is offset by higher commission charges...
You can order foreign currency via ladsholiday.com with our partnerTravelex- they'll provide the best rates - guaranteed. And they can deliver the money to you or you can collect it at the airport.
Other options in include the Post Office or Marks and Spencer neither of whom charge commission and generally offer a good rate. And remember that most banks and bureaux de change will only exchange notes - not coins - back into sterling.

Travel Insurance

The first piece of advice has to be: Don't buy it from your tour operator! They charge a premium, and you can get it from independent insurers for under a tenner! Have a look at flexicover's policies.
Make sure you have it sorted before you leave: In 2008 1 in 5 under 25's went on a holiday without insurance. This is crazy, as you would be liable for anything that happens, and you wouldn't get any money back if anything is stolen (or lost, or accidently falls off the balcony!). You should also carry a European Health Insurance Card, which entitles you to some free medical treatments. You can apply online here.

The fact is that because of our age (and the activities we get involved in on our lad's holidays!): we are the most likely group to need our insurance. Get it here!
